What inspired you to become a personal trainer?
I’ve always been drawn to the idea of creating a physical challenge for yourself and then overcoming it. I’ve also suffered from chronic depression and anxiety, so I studied/used fitness and nutrition to rise above this challenge and heal myself. This drove me to want to help others overcome their personal challenges through the power of fitness and nutrition.
What is your training philosophy?
I’ve created a mix of plyometrics, HIIT, pilates and strength training to create my personal style in which I train many of my clients with great success for their strongest, leanest and most toned body. No matter what style of training you prefer, it is vital you are consistently pushing harder. If you are not challenging yourself, you will not change. However, it’s also important you include ‘maintenance’ in your training, such as weekly yoga and foam rolling. Treat your body with love while pushing it to its limits, and it will give back to you the results you’re looking for.
What personal challenges have you overcome through better nutrition and training?
I’ve overcome letting my tendency to get depression and anxiety get the best of me. Instead, I’ve increased the quality of my life drastically, and am now fueling my passion to help others do the same.
What are your current personal fitness goals?
I am always looking to improve my speed, strength and flexibility. Currently I am working on strengthening my back muscles, as I naturally have a weaker back due to scoliosis. I am also working on my running speed and power, so I can hit harder mountain trails and be able to run the entire length!
What areas do you think people overlook when it comes to getting healthier?
Nutrition. Unfortunately there is so much misleading information out there which can make eating properly very confusing. So, I don’t blame those who overlook certain aspects to nutrition. Plus, eating out makes it hard to control what you are really eating. So many restaurants and food products add unnecessary sugar and preservatives which have a hugely negative impact on health. My best advice in one sentence would be to always choose the most natural, whole food option.
Can you tell us more about your Tailor My Body Package?
The Tailor My Body package consists of a completely customized workout and eating plan for one month. I design your program from scratch so it is tailored to your personal goals, life schedule and preferences. I also offer guidance, motivation and support through the entire month, without the high costs of in-person personal training.
What is your favorite exercise (or exercises) and why?
I absolutely love HIIT workouts. Sign me up for anything with high intensity. I love seeing this as a challenge I can overcome, because once I do…damn it feels amazing!! Getting a crazy sweat feels incredibly refreshing and leaves me feeling empowered. Plus, I don’t have to spend an hour and a half on a machine, I can do it anywhere I please and really only need 45 minutes to achieve incredible results.
What advice do you have for people looking to get fit for the first time?
Start with the basics. Don’t sign yourself up for something too complicated. Keep it simple so you can stay consistent and build a solid foundation. Once that becomes easy, step it up a notch.
How do you keep your clients motivated?
I keep my clients motivated by being available to them at all times via phone, text or email and by reminding them of the positive ripple effect workouts will have on their lives!
And, how do you keep yourself motivated?
I keep a major focus on the fact that action is 100% necessary to achieve growth in any area of your life, and what is more action-based than challenging workouts? I also make sure I change up my workout routines by adding new moves I’ve either learned or developed on my own each month. This allows me to keep it fresh, making things more interesting and less ‘regular’.
Finally, what is your favorite cheat food?
Shoot, I can only pick one?! Gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. Don’t mind if I do! And by cookies I mean both the dough and cooked!
